Very nice. Do you like the Raphael Saadiq record? It intrigued me…and the Al Green one. Long live ?uestlove!

Before I left on my trip, I watched the Dave Matthews live event on TV – I only have one CD of his, but I put that on (the one with So Much TO Say and Crash). I may get the new CD – the live TV thing was amazing.

I bought the new Mat Kearney project – I really like it. He dropped the rap thing, which disappointed me a bit, it made him so unique. And there’s a part of me that wonders if I like him because it sounds like a Coldplay record. He’s got really strong writing sensibility – some great hooks; though the music can run together a little bit…. Read More

I got some old Dylan before I left on this trip, but I haven’t been listening to my iPod much (surprising, considering how much I’ve been on a plane).

What has been the most thought captivating thing here for me is looking at the evolution or modernization of African music – at least in the small pockets that I traveled in.

I visited a church in Kampala – I went to college with the Arts director there. He says the young people don’t like to do the “African” songs and the things they write sound… Read More more like modern (I called it “western” he called it “global” – he’s right) rock/pop.

His pastor’s (Americans) love the Hillsong approach/sound/whatever (sound familiar anyone?) and want to model themselves after that. I hope they will be able to somehow fuse their African/Ugandan heritage with modern music – it would be such a shame to see another church just trying to imitate something that is not their own – and then wonder why it doesn’t work.

Starfield. Some of the best praise ever!

Good stuff. The Roots are probably one of the most mind-blowing groups out there. 100% Dundee! And Socs, the way you’ve been talkin up Paul Simon lately, I had to go back and dig up my CDs. Graceland is an all-time classic, but I’ve really been listening to The Rhythm of the Saints quite a bit lately too. Here’s what else is bouncing around my head

Widespread Panic, Carbondale 2000- unbelievable concert from my alltime favorite band.

Trey Anastasio- on some pretty interesting musical journeys ever since Phish stopped touring…. Read More

The Radiators, Live at the Great American Music Hall- New Orleans Blues. Love it.

The Derek Trucks Band, Songlines- Trucks mixes like 16 types of music into one sound, its amazing.

As you can probably tell, the jambands are my favorite!

Dave, that’s such an intriguing conversation! Man, I don’t know where music would be today without the unique heritage Africa has offered it historically. It’s sad to think that potentially new sounds are being left undiscovered because the people want to stick with what’s a hit @ the moment.

Love the Saadiq record! I don’t know how to explain it … Read Morethat well, but it sounds so true to the Motown sound, yet so fresh and modern in many ways. The Al Green is a MUST HEAR!

I’m a little more interested in Dave Matthews lately. Sarah’s always liked him, but I never dug. Can’t wait to hang when you get back!

Chris, my wife has been trying to get me to listen to The Rhythm of the Saints lately. I’m looking foward to it! I’ll take a gander @ some of the other stuff. Thanks for posting!
